Councilor McCormick Lg

Michael McCormick - Council Position #5

Term of Office: January 2013 to December 2016

Councilor Michael McCormick, a retired Portland firefighter who has lived in Gresham since 1957, was elected to a four-year term in Council Position 5 in November 2012 and sworn into office on Jan. 8, 2013.

Prior to being elected, Councilor McCormick served as a Gresham Fire Corps volunteer beginning in 2008, and as president of the Gresham Butte Neighborhood Association in 2009 and 2010. He served on the 2010-11 Gresham Public Safety Committee.

Councilor McCormick, who grew up in Rockwood, is a graduate of Centennial High School and the Fire Academy. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967, and worked for the Portland Fire Bureau/Fire District 10 from 1971 to 2003.

Councilor McCormick's committee assignments include the Public Safety Committee, Natural Resources & Sustainability Committee, and the Council Employee Performance Subcommittee.

Councilor McCormick says he works to “provide an environment favorable to economic growth.” This, he says, includes supporting public safety personnel, small businesses and improving transportation facilities in and around Gresham. He also seeks to build civic pride through community events, and would like to see his idea of a community fireworks display gain momentum.

In his free time, Councilor McCormick enjoys coffee-roasting and an active association with Destiny Christian Fellowship in Happy Valley.
