Update: Gresham homicide victim identified

On September 24, officers responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 17900 block of SE Market Street. They located 60-year-old Jeff Thompson shot to death inside the residence. Gresham Police detectives and members of the East County Major Crimes Team responded to conduct the homicide investigation. 

Using a combination of modern technology and traditional investigative techniques, detectives identified a suspect in Thompson’s death. This included public safety camera systems which were recently installed in nearby Vance Park and data captured by automatic license plate reader systems. 

The public safety cameras were installed in Vance Park and other high activity locations around the City of Gresham to deter crime and aid the investigation of crimes that do occur. The Gresham Police Department utilizes automatic license plate reader equipment made by Motorola, as authorized by Oregon 2026 Senate Bill 1516. 

Detectives located the suspect near a motel in southeast Portland. They requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force in taking the suspect into custody. The suspect fled during the arrest attempt and an officer-involved shooting occurred.  During the shooting, the suspect was killed and PPB K9 Kylo was fatally wounded.

9/24/26: Homicide investigation underway; Suspect shot and killed in Portland

Shortly after 7:00 am on Thursday, September 24, Gresham Police officers were dispatched to a welfare check at a residence in the 17900 block of SE Market Street. They discovered the occupant of the residence deceased under suspicious circumstances. Detectives determined the victim died by homicidal violence and identified a suspect. 

Later that morning, investigators located the suspect in the area of SE Pine Street and SE 99th Avenue in Portland. They requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force in taking the suspect into custody. The suspect fled during the arrest attempt and an officer-involved shooting occurred. 

During the shooting, PPB K9 Kylo was fatally wounded. K9 Kylo was a true protector of the peace. We ask our community to keep the officers and professional staff of the Portland Police Bureau in your thoughts as they honor K9 Kylo’s legacy and sacrifice.

The homicide victim is not being identified pending notification of the next of kin. The deceased suspect is also not being identified at this time.
