Skills for the job
- Desire to learn local land use planning ordinances and state statues governing planning, public hearing and environmental decision-making processes.
 - Urban design concepts and theory, including architectural design.
 - Explain and apply policies, laws, administrative rules and codes.
 - Ability to coordinate, negotiate and resolve conflicting points of view and perform effective public outreach meetings and events.
 - Use computers, applications and software relevant to the field, including GIS and graphic design tools.
 - Ability to compile and analyze data.
 - Work primarily in an office setting while sitting at a computer or assisting customers at a counter.
 
Education
Options are available from the high school and GED-diploma level through college degrees, including an associate or bachelor's degree.
