In his own words: Firefighter Spencer Tejedas reflects on Gresham Fire Academy 25-02
August 1, 2025
The firefighter returned to train the class of new firefighters after extended medical leave
When a dozen recruits from Gresham Fire Academy Class 25-02 first stepped onto the training grounds, “they came in as individuals — some wide-eyed and eager, others quietly determined,” observed Training Instructor/Firefighter Spencer Tejedas in his July 3 speech to the graduating class. Three gritty and grueling months later — thanks to support from the voter-approved Fire and Police Levy — these same recruits stood before a crowd of leadership, community and family, united and ready to take their oath of office. Thank you, voters! The levy funds a third of Class 25-02, and all seven graduates of previous academy 25-01, finally lifting the Gresham Fire Department to full staffing after years outmatched by population growth. For the public, that means better service.
From the podium, Tejedas looked into the graduates’ eyes and beamed. He and his fellow trainers had pushed them hard through physical, mental, and tactical drills, plus classroom learning. “I’ve seen fear turn into confidence. I’ve seen struggle give way to strength,” he said. “I’ve watched individuals become a team — a brotherhood and sisterhood forged in sweat, grit, and hard-earned respect.”
Within days, the new firefighter graduates would be assigned to fire stations and rolling on emergencies. The busy department responded to more than 17,500 service calls last year. "Remember what you’ve learned here, not just the techniques and tactics, but the lessons in humility, in perseverance, in accountability,” Tejedas said before bagpipes wailed a final ceremonial tribute. “Carry those with you into every call, every shift, every moment you put on that badge.”
Tejedas played a meaningful role for Fire Academy 25-02. Here’s what one graduate had to say.
